The gift of giving

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” ―Maya Angelou

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a giver. My mom forced me into volunteer work as a young child. I fought it at first but then I grew to love it. looking back now, I am grateful for my mother encouraging me to give. I started volunteering a animal shelters in the summers where I cared for the animals, walked dogs, played with cats and scooped horse poop. In highschool, I would keep the elderly company after school. It was so rewarding to see their eyes light up just to have someone to spend time with. My first real job was at an old age home where I started serving food and moved on to become the activities director. Throughout my adult life, I have donated my time to being of service. I have volunteered at orphanages, cooked for the homeless, and taken care of abandoned animals. The happiest and most fulfillment I have experienced has come from being of service. Giving has helped me through some of the darkest depressions in my life.

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” ―H. Jackson Brown Jr.

For the last four years, I have been raising money to fund trips to Costa Rica to bring supplies, yoga, art and photography to orphanages and children in need. Seeing the joy that fills these kids is the best feeling in the world. To be honest, I would love to do this full time but I also need to make a living to support myself. Diving even deeper over the four years I have spent on these trips to Costa Rica, I have found my deepest purpose within my passion of photography in my Goddess Sessions. In every location I have traveled, I have given away a photography session. The photographs above are of the contest winner from my giveaway contest, a local Costa Rican. It was so wonderful to make this opportunity available to someone who may not have the resoucres to afford a photography session. The more I give, the more I receive in ways I would never have expected. I have recieved gifts, currency and formed new connections. Giving fills me in ways I never dreamt it would. I am continueing to think of new ways to give back. I would love your feedback! If you have any ideas of what I can give or and suggestions, I would love to hear them. Please comment below!

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” ―Pablo Picasso

What would it feel like to truly give something without the expectation of receiving? How can you serve or be of service?
